PSDESIGNS BMW E46 CHASSIS REPAIR / REINFORCEMENT PLATE KIT

The BMW E46 has been plagued with an unfortunate weak point since the birth of it's chassis.  The rear axle carrier panel is highly susceptible to cracking and tearing due to varying design flaws.  From continuous transition between on-off throttle, the panel begins to fatigue due to a pitching movement of the rear subframe.

 

This kit has been designed to fit perfectly, each hole lines up with a corresponding feature, as it is supposed to, be it spot weld locations, the contour of the panel, the shape of the floor or bolt hole/mounting features etc.

Each kit is checked before it leaves our workshop to ensure this is the case. If the “other kits” on the market have holes in different locations I would question why, the spot welds/features are in fixed locations on the car’s rear axle carrier panel so why are the holes located differently? Additionally there is a specific number of holes in our kit so as not to interfere with the structural integrity of the plate and how they dissipate loading forces across their surface area, we didn’t just design a kit, we engineered it (probably over engineered it) to be the best we could make it, it took 6 months to develop and correctly test. 

 

The PSDesigns-E46-Rear-Subframe-Reinforcement-kit® has been designed to provide the best repair and reinforcement option available on the market, regardless of crack damage, age, mileage, service history or modifications made.

POWERFLEX REAR SHOCK TOP MOUNTS (E36, E46 INCL. M3)

The rear topmounts on BMW E36 and E46 chassis’ (including M3 and E85/E86 Z4) are a known failure point, often resulting in the shock punching through the factory part. Powerflex developed this billet aluminium and polyurethane replacement, which includes a reinforcement bracket. This solves the problem while also adding support for the shock turret sheet metal. Available in either standard Powerflex material or harder ‘Black Series’ material, intended for track use.

 

Part number 30 on diagram. Priced per pair – one pair required per vehicle. Covered under Powerflex’s lifetime warranty. Standard BMW topmounts are 10mm, please check shock absorber size before ordering as some shock absorbers (including JRZ and Tein) use 12mm.

The CSF E46 M3 Oil Cooler is a high-quality, high performance, drop-in solution for the constant battle of keeping fluids at their optimal operating temperatures in your M3.

 

Even in stock trim, the oil in an E46 M3 gets hotter than you might expect. Add additional horsepower and stress on the engine by running it around the track for just 10 minutes straight, and the oil gets extremely hot. Even the best synthetic oils should be kept under 250°F if possible and never above 300 degrees, yet on the E46 M3, the stock cooler just won't get the job done.

The tuning potential for the charge-cooled M1/240i, 1/2/3/420i and 1/2/3/425i is huge. However, once boost levels are increased the charge air temperature increases which is due to compressed air heating up. The stock cooling system works okay on a stock car but once boost levels are increased and more heat is introduced it begins to struggle.

Increased heat robs power in several ways, the main being that hotter air is less dense and results in less oxygen which is key for power and with the hotter air the risk of knock is also increased, to counter this the ECU will introduce its safety protocols to reduce power until the air is cool again.

CSF VAG MQB Triple Pass Water Radiator for the VW MK7 Golf GTi, MK7 Golf R, 5F Leon Cupra, 5E Octavia vRS

With the MQB platform able to generate huge amounts of power, with an output increase of almost 30% achievable with intakes, exhausts, intercooler and software an often overlooked area for improvement is the factory engine water cooling system. 

With such a substantial increase in output easily achievable it's easy to understand why the factory water radiator can struggle to exchange the heat from the engine and now exhaust gas heat from the integrated engine head exhaust manifold. It's not uncommon for these engines, whilst showing 90c on the coolant dial to actually be running in excess of 110c up to 130c during track driving when properly logged. 

 

Whatsmore is that during spirited driving, whilst the engine water coolant temp becomes high so does the engine oil. It's not uncommon for engine oil temperatures to spike to over 130c-145c during spirited driving and struggles to reduce without substantial time spent cooling the car down. This is due to there being no factory engine oil cooler, so the factory water radiator has a lot of work to do. 

 

Let's take a look at the stock cooler... The Stock Cooler:

The stock cooler uses a single row, 26 mm core and is of a single pass design. This is a very thin core for this that does not make use of the available space efficiently which contributes to the cooling issues. After months of development, we have developed a solution which maximises the efficiency and of the space available whilst maintaining all of the factory mounting locations, hose locations etc for a direct replacement part, our specification is below..

 

CSF's All-Aluminium Triple Pass Water Radiator

The CSF All-Aluminum Triple Pass Water Radiator utilises a 2-row 42mm core. Utilising all of the space between the condenser and radiator the core depth has been maximised and compatibility confirmed with large aftermarket intercoolers such as IE. The B-tube design maximises the tube efficiency in all areas, this tube design is stronger than 0-tubes less material can be used for a lighter more efficient heat transfer whilst surface area inside the tube is increased by 15% over 0-tubes. 

The Triple Pass design means coolant passes across the core three times before it exits maximising the time the radiator has to exchange heat for the coolest outlet temperature. Finally, the 6.5mm fin height has been wind tunnel optimised in CSF's in-house wind tunnel, leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of the ultimate MQB Water Radiator solution. 

 

TESTING: CSF All-Aluminum Triple Pass Water Radiator & Quadruple Pass DSG Cooler on 500HP Track MK7R

The customer reported that engine water temperatures when logged properly were showing regularly in the 110c and even as high as 130c on track. As well as this, engine oil temperatures were a huge concern, rising to 130c within 3 fast laps and then rising uncontrollably through 130cs to over140c, the customer then had to drive between 4500RPM-5500RPM to maintain a "safe" oil and water temperature. 

With the CSF's cooling upgrade this is no longer the case, testing has shown that engine water temperature does not go above 100.5c. The engines oil temperature is also running under 125c in this test which the customer reported was a drop in as much as 10c-15c. Previously, the engine oil temperature would rise to 130c within 2-3 fast laps and then rise uncontrollably to well above 130c - 140c plus, to keep under 130c. 

 

Conclusion: CSF's MQB Cooling Upgrade drops both engine water and engine oil temperatures consistently. 

 

TESTING: CSF All-Aluminum Triple Pass Water Radiator,  Quadruple Pass DSG Cooler & Quadruple Pass Auxilary Engine Water Radiator on 500HP Track MK7R

With the success of the above test the customer then wanted to add the Quadruple Pass Auxilary Engine Water Radiator to their car. In 10c higher ambient than the above testing and a higher load circuit (GoodWood) the customer experienced the same 100.5c peak engine water temperatures and engine oil temperatures well under the 130c level. 

 

Conclusion: CSF's MQB Cooling Upgrade provides a large increase in cooling power to the factory water cooling circuit, enough to keep engine water temperatures well within ideal operating conditions and has a benefit for engine oil temperatures too.

CSF VAG MQB Quadruple Pass DSG Cooler

The cooling ineffectiveness of the DSG Cooler can be explained after examining the stock cooling system design. 

 

The factory coolant routes out of the engine block, into a Y-piece where it splits into the engine water radiator and then into the DSG cooler. This DSG Cooler is surprisingly small and does not have the size or efficiency to exchange heat before it exits the cooler and routes to the DSG oil/water heat exchanger.

If the engine coolant is hot and the DSG oil is hot, which is the case when driving cars with a higher output than stock, spirited or track use, this hot coolant now has little to no cooling effect on the DSG oil and DSG temperatures begin to rise…

 

With a high oil temperature, the DSG is at risk of becoming damaged. To help prevent damage the DSG will begin to lower the torque, increase shift times and in extreme circumstances gears can be lost. In the worst cases, costly damage to the gearbox can be caused. 

After extensive analysis and development, CSF has created a Quadruple Pass DSG Cooler gives an increased cooling performance over the stock item in a number of areas.

The customer reported that the DSG gearbox in his Golf R would begin to feel sluggish, shifting slowly and even entering a reduced power mode when pushing hard.  Once the CSF Quadruple Pass DSG cooler was fitted this problem was eliminated, testing has shown that the DSG oil temperature now rises and falls with the engine coolant temperature which in this test did not go above 100.5c. 

 

Conclusion:  The CSF Quadruple Pass DSG Cooler keeps DSG temps well within ideal operating conditions.
